If ever there was an obnoxious marketing term, “Moparized” is it.  Chrysler’s parts division, Mopar, will be bringing four “Moparized” vehicles to the annual Easter Jeep Safari later this month.

Amongst them is a supposedly new version of the Dodge Ram Power Wagon, an off-road capable full-size pickup.  It features a blacked-out grille, and new hood, headlights, foglights, and front bumper.  As seen in the drawing, the truck has a reduced-size cabin that fits only two people, eliminating the need for four doors.  The bed also looks small, making room for a full-size spare tire.

The Jeep Patriot Extreme also has a blackened grille and hood, like the Ram Power.  It is an off-road capable SUV painted in a bright orange guaranteed to scare off any indigenous species.  16-inch TJ Moab wheels are wrapped in BF Goodrich KM2 tires, with an extra 2-inch suspension lift to avoid damage.  Rock rails were also installed at the front and back to protect the SUV.

Also being shown off is the Jeep Wrangler J7, based on the Rubicon.  This also looks to feature a black hood, as well as roof, window surrounds, wheel arches, and front bumper.  Last, is another model derived from the Rubicon.  The Jeep Wrangler Trail Boss is an off-road model with a more open top and sides.

The four “Moparized” Dodge and Jeep models will be on display from March 27 at the Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah.

Mopar® Releases Sketches for 44th Annual Easter Jeep® Safari

Auburn Hills, Mich., Mar 12, 2010 – Mopar® is getting ready for Moab. Chrysler Group LLC’s fifth brand is preparing to reveal a truck-load of “Moparized” vehicles at the 44th annual Easter Jeep® Safari in Moab, Utah which takes place from March 27 through April 4.

The following are select sketches of the Jeep Wrangler J7, Jeep Patriot Extreme, Jeep Wrangler Trail Boss and Ram Power Wagon.

Ram PowerWagon: the full-size pickup truck of choice in a range of off-road situations.

Jeep Wrangler Trail Boss: a two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon that is built for serious off-road duty.

Jeep Wrangler J7: built off a four-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and designed to have the basic appeal of military-issued vehicles.

Jeep Patriot Extreme: a Sunburst Orange Jeep Patriot model equipped with the Trail-Rated off-road package and added a 2-inch Rocky Road Outfitters suspension lift, TJ ‘Moab’ 16-inch wheels, and BF Goodrich KM2 tires. Additional protection is added to the front and rear fascias with custom rock rails. Mopar added heavy-duty slush mats, Kicker audio and a roof-mounted snowboard carrier.

Romeo made a limited return to the United States with the 8C Competizione, a full scale onslaught could occur in 2012.

During a speech last week, Fiat’s CEO Sergio Marchionne said “I’m a lot more confident now that Alfa Romeo will reconstitute a product offering that is acceptable globally, and more in particular in the United States and Canada. There is a strong likelihood that the brand will be back here within the next 24 months.”

While details are limited, Alfa Romeo’s North American lineup would likely include the 159 replacement dubbed Giulia (a mid-sized sedan and station wagon) and a Chrysler 300-based 166 replacement. These models could be joined by the MiTo, considering several have been spotted in Metro Detroit.

Alfa’s return to the U.S. could be a key turning point for the brand. In past decade, sales have been in a virtual freefall. Last year, Alfa was only able to sell 102,000 vehicles – a decline of 101,000 units compared to the year 2000.

Bold face, familiar design

Amid a sea of uninspiring special editions, Chrysler apparently hid pictures of the redesigned 2012 (or 2013) 300C at the North American International Auto Show.

Caught by MPGomatic, while filming the Chrysler Delta (aka Lancia Delta), the image seems to show the front headlight (with possible integrated LED turn signals) and grille of the upcoming 300C. The other pictures are believed to be shots of the Chrysler 200C EV Concept, which debuted at NAIAS 2009.

As you may recall, when Chrysler entered bankruptcy, they released a rendering of the redesigned 300 (then labeled a 2010 model) as part of the company’s viability plan. A few months later, an interior image was unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show.

Engine options are expected to include a 280 hp 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and a revised 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with at least 360 hp. According to Chrysler, the V6 will offer a 22 percent improvement in fuel economy (over the current 3.5-liter V6), which translates into an estimated EPA rating of 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

Lancia Delta Disguised as Chrysler at 2010 NAIAS in Detroit

Fiat is showing off their influence on Chrysler at this year’s NAIAS.  The Italian automaker has 20% ownership of the American brand, managerial control over it, and is using the Detroit show to introduce new models to Americans.

Small cars are seen as critical to Chrysler’s a new chapter in the company’s history.  Thus, new management ordered engineers at Fiat-owned Lancia to rebrand the Delta as a Chrysler.  Sporting a new grille, the Delta is not expected to be rebranded as a Chrysler for the North American market. The rebadged Lancia is mainly a conversation piece for Chrysler to guage reactions to the synergistic possibilities between the two brands.

The Delta is joined by the Fiat 500 EV and the Abarth 500.  Fiat plans to kick-off NA sales of the 500 later this year with a 100-horsepower 1.4-liter engine produced in Michigan.  A 175-horsepower turbocharged unit will be fitted for the NA-spec Abarth 500.  Vehicle production will take place in Mexico.

New name, minor tweaks

Chrysler has announced plans to introduce a revised 300, dubbed the 300 S6 and the 300 S8, at the North American International Auto Show.

In terms of styling, the updated model features a blacked-out grille, body-color accents, darkened headlights, cleanly “shaved” doors, chrome door handles, and 20-inch wheels.

Inside, the 300 has a revised steering wheel (with red stitching and brushed silver spokes), brushed aluminum accents, faux carbon fiber trim, and dark gray seats upholstered in leather and suede.

Other goodies include a 13-speaker Kicker audio system (with a 322-watt amplifier and 100-watt subwoofer), SIRIUS satellite radio, HomeLink, remote start, heated front seats, and power-adjustable pedals.

The 300 S6 is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 250 hp (186 kW), while the 300 S8 has a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with 360 hp (268 kW) and 389 lb-ft (527 Nm) of torque.

Look for the “new” 300 to start arriving at dealerships this spring.

Chrysler 300 S6 and 300 S8

Starting with the sedan that marked the return of the great American car, the new 2010 Chrysler 300 S6 (3.5-liter V-6 engine) and 300 S8 (HEMI® V-8 engine) reignite the vehicle’s incredible styling in an all-new model.

Both the Chrysler 300 S6 and 300 S8 models add a very serious, low-key look to the bold proportions of the Chrysler 300. Starting with its 300 roots, the 300 S6 and 300 S8 models trade-in their full-chromed grilles and fascia accents for blacked-out grilles with chromed surround and body-color fascia accents. New darkened headlamp bezels keep up the low-key look, while cleanly “shaved” doors with body-color mirrors and large 20-inch polished face wheels with painted pockets, hint at the 300 S6 and 300 S8’s handling potential. Chromed door handles, belt molding and daylight opening surrounds foreshadow the luxurious appointments within the vehicle.

The cabins of the new Chrysler 300 S6 and 300 S8 models exude a serious, athletic-interior theme. A uniquely designed steering wheel with carbon weave is accented with red stitching and brushed silver spokes. Beautifully bolstered Dark Slate Gray leather front seats are track-tested and feature an embroidered “300 S” logo on the seatback. Specially perforated Dark Slate Gray suede fills the front and rear seats, seatback and seat cushion with hints of red accent beneath. The Dark Slate interior theme continues around the driver and passenger side and is highlighted with brushed aluminum accents on the instrument panel center stack, center console side trim and upper-door trim. Carbon-weave door-pull handles with red accent stitching finish off the interior of both 300 S6 and 300 S8 models.

Keeping passengers connected with their favorite tunes or mobile devices, the 300 S6 and 300 S8 models feature an array of user-friendly technologies including a 13-speaker Kicker audio system with a 322-watt amplifier and 100-watt subwoofer, UconnectTM Phone, iPod® Control and SIRIUS Satellite Radio. Chrysler UK has announced some minor updates for the 2010 300C.

The new 300C SE starts at £23,995 (OTR) and features leather trimmed seats, heated front seats, dual zone climate control, LED ambient lighting, front fog lamps, and parking sensors. Other goodies include xenon headlamps, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, 18″ aluminum wheels, and a six speaker Boston Acoustics audio system.

If you want something a little more special, Chrysler offers the 300C SR for £24,995 (OTR). It has an auto-dimming rear view mirror, an upgraded Boston Acoustics sound system (with a subwoofer and GPS navigation), and a hands-free communication system.

Moving further up the ladder, the 300C SRT is priced at £27,995 (OTR). It features a mesh grille, additional chrome detailing, body-color exterior components (door mirrors and door handles), wheel arch extensions, 20 inch aluminum wheels, leather and suede sports seats, and carbon fiber interior trim.

All the aforementioned models have a 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine that produces 215 bhp and 376 lb-ft of torque. It enables the 300C to accelerate from 0-62.5 mph in 8.7 seconds, before topping out at 143 mph.

Should the previous variants fail to impress you, Chrysler also has the £41,795 (OTR) 300C SRT-8. Powered by a 6.1-liter V8 HEMI, with 425 bhp and 420 lb-ft of torque, the SRT-8 rockets from 0-62.5 mph in just 5.0 seconds before hitting a top speed of 165 mph. Other performance tweaks include Brembo brakes, a specially-tuned suspension, and a revised steering unit.

Ferrari 458 Italia and Maserati GranCabrio in the house too

The relatively new manufacturing partnership between Chrysler and Fiat will get a public test next month.  An electric version of the Fiat 500, and a Lancia Delta with a grille from Chrysler will be shown off on the American automaker’s stand at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

By showing off a Fiat 500 EV, Chrysler will be taking a calculated gamble: that American consumers looking for a small urban car may be the first customers to consider buying an all-electric.  This directly rivals the thinking behind the Chevrolet Volt, which seems to be more interested in attracting suburbanites.  Reaction to this debut may dictate whether a 500 EV could eventually go on sale in the States.

This also marks the North American debut for a few other 500 models.  Chrysler will also wheel out the Fiat 500C convertible and the Fiat 500 Abarth.  Already shown earlier in the year, the 500 hatchback hits the NA market in 2010, with the 500C going on sale in 2011.  North and Central American 500 cars will be assembled in Toluca, Mexico, with a 100-horsepower 1.4-liter FIRE engine coming from a plant in Michigan.  A turbocharged version, producing up to 175 hp, will be branded for Abarth.

More symbolic is the Lancia Delta introduction.  The very European-looking mid-size hatchback represents the first step in Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne’s plan to merge Lancia and Chrysler.  Also on the Chrysler stand will be the Ferrari 458 Italia and Maserati GranCabrio.  Both luxury brands have Fiat for a parent.

Each vehicle goes on display in Detroit beginning January 11.

Fiat 1.4-liter, Four-cylinder Turbo FIRE engine with Multiair

Fiat’s Multiair engine will start production at the Chrysler Group’s Michigan factory in the fourth quarter of 2010. An amount of US$179 million will be spent by Chrysler in preparing the Dundee facility, thus creating 155 new jobs and a total of 573 for the entire project. The plant will have an annual capacity of 100,000 engines to be fitted into Mexican-built Fiat 500 units. After receiving their engines half the 500s will stay in the Latin America market while the rest go to selected Chrysler showrooms in the US.

The Fully Integrated Robotised Engine (FIRE) is a 1.4-litre naturally aspirated motor making a basic 75kW (102hp) at 6,750rpm and 129Nm (95 lb-ft) at 4,250rpm. A turbocharged version will appear later with about 129kW (175hp). Fiat says Multiair technology helps deliver up to 10 percent more power and 10 percent less fuel consumption compared to similar competitive engines.

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm was at the announcement made by Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. She said: “This is Fiat’s first investment in Michigan. Michigan is ready to be your partner on any future investment.”

Chrysler Group LLC Introduces Fiat’s 1.4-liter, In-line 4-cylinder, Fully Integrated Robotized Engine with Multiair Technology to Powertrain Lineup

Auburn Hills, Mich., Dec 17, 2009 – Chrysler Group LLC will debut Fiat’s 1.4-liter, in-line four-cylinder Fully Integrated Robitized Engine (FIRE) featuring Multiair in the Fiat 500 starting in 2010. The engine, well-suited for a small car application, delivers 100 horsepower (75 kW) at 6,750 rpm and 95 lb.-ft. (129 N•m) of torque at 4,250 rpm. A turbo version also will be available in future applications. The 1.4-liter FIRE features Fiat’s Multiair technology, which significantly reduces emissions while improving fuel economy and power delivery.

The 1.4-liter FIRE features four valves per cylinder and incorporates state-of-the-art technology for Fully Variable Valve Actuation (FVVA), also known as MultiAir. Multiair is a sophisticated technology that delivers an increase in power up to 10 percent and a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions up to 10 percent when compared to similar engines. A turbo version of the engine is also planned and will produce a fuel economy improvement up to 25 percent when compared to a V-6 engine with equivalent power.

The MultiAir system consists of electro-hydraulic variable valve actuators filled with conventional oil, which is interposed between the camshaft and each valve. A solenoid valve is energized every 360-degree camshaft rotation, regulating the quantity of oil addressed to the actuator or to a reservoir. The lift of the valve is a function of the quantity of oil addressed to the actuator, ranging from full lift to complete valve closure. Each solenoid valve may also delay application of the actuator in advance, leading to late valve opening or early valve closing.

MultiAir is exclusive for Chrysler Group in North America and is based on a series of Fiat Powertrain patents related to hardware, combustion strategies and controls that allow for full control of the lift and timing of engine valves.

In the early 1970s, robotics in assembly plants was not common. The term “FIRE” came into existence when Fiat integrated the use of robotics in the production process of manufacturing plants. Although mechanized assembly is commonplace today, the brand name FIRE has remained with Fiat’s powertrain lineup.

The 1.4-liter FIRE with Multiair is the world’s first mass production engine to incorporate such technology to control the intake valves. Dedicated components have been developed to accommodate four “bricks” (one for each cylinder), which package relevant components. MultiAir technology can be adapted to different types of engines, including Diesels for enhanced NOx control, and is planned for Chrysler Powertrain’s four-cylinder World Gas Engine and all-new Pentastar V-6.

Alfa Romeo Kamal SUV spy photos, 29.09.2009 – 1325

Employees at Elasis (Pomigliano), one of Fiat’s R&D firms, have been a little trigger-happy with their cameras recently.  One of their workers leaked out photos of this concept, the Alfa Romeo Kamal (photos included), which we first saw at the Geneva Motor Show of 2003.

These photos, with Elasis headquarters in the background, were taken in September.  What is unknown is if this vehicle is a mule being used for testing, or an abandoned Kamal design study just being moved elsewhere.  The Alfa Romeo Kamal had been rumored for 2010 production on the Alfa Romeo 159 platform.  But those plans changed after the Fiat/Chrysler mashup.  Back in June, the speculation was that two SUVs would be built by Jeep, and get the A.R. shield.

However, with Fiat and Chrysler chief Sergio Marchionne preparing to unveil the Fiat Group’s short- and mid-term plans later this month, perhaps this SUV could be a sign of things to come.  Alfa Romeo has toyed with the idea of releasing a SUV for years, and Chrysler certainly has a number of potential partner vehicles available for re-branding.

Minor improvements, huge changes

Chrysler has outlined their five-year product plan during a lengthy press conference at the automaker’s Technology Center in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

The plan has multiple phases and the first results will be seen in 2010, when a number of underperforming vehicles are given an emergency facelift. Key recipients include the Chrysler Sebring sedan, the Jeep Patriot, the Jeep Compass, the Jeep Wrangler, the Dodge Avenger and the Dodge Journey.

While facelifts will be huge in 2010, the company will also launch new versions of the Chrysler 300, the Jeep Grand Cherokee (which arrives in May), the Dodge Charger, and a new full-size Dodge SUV (likely a Durango replacement, based on the redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee).

During 2011, the Wrangler will receive a new interior and various other upgrades.

In 2012, the Dodge Caliber will be put out to pasture. It will be replaced by new compact sedan given to Chrysler and Dodge.

For 2013, Chrysler gets a Fiat B platform-based small car, a Sebring replacement, and a new mid-sized crossover. Jeep will launch a small SUV based on the Fiat Panda, while the Patriot and Liberty will be replaced by Fiat-based SUVs. Dodge gets a Fiat-based small car and an Avenger replacement.

In 2014, Chrysler and Dodge will launch new versions of the Town & Country and Grand Caravan minivans.

The newly created Ram brand (aka Dodge Trucks), will kill the Dakota pickup in 2011 (could be replaced by a car-based vehicle) and launch new Fiat-based commercial vans in 2012.

According to the Fiat overlords, Chrysler will have projected $5 billion operating profit (by 2014) thanks to the sale of 2 million vehicles per year (up from 950,000). While it sounds like everything Chrysler designed will be killed, only 56 percent of Chrysler’s vehicles will be based on Fiat platforms by 2014.

‘First day of a new Chrysler’

“Today is the first day of a new Chrysler,” said Chrysler and Fiat CEO, Sergio Marchionne. Having unveiled their 5-year product plan today, Chrysler present a new logo to work alongside product refreshes in changing brand associations in the minds of consumers. It streamlines a logo that has been in use since the mid-90s, moving ‘Chrysler’ lettering from above the wings to at their heart within a new blue block central to the design.

Plagued by sales plunges across its brands, Chrysler Group expects to break even in 2011 following the repayment of some $9 billion in government bailout money and a rise in revenue from $42.5bn in 2010 to $67.5bn in 2014. Hitting these financial targets will require worldwide sales doubling from 1.3 to 2.8 million vehicles.

A brand change is, therefore, all the more important. It reflects an ongoing restructuring that begins with a new 5-year product plan. The health of the firm is already improving ahead of new product development; break even was achieved in September and the last few months have seen more money roll in than out, with Marchionne confident the cash won’t deplete as new models are developed off Fiat technology.

In the meantime, a host of ‘emergency’ facelifts will renew 75% of the line-up by 2010, the remainder being refreshed by 2012. This strategy will align with a range of new platforms from both Chrysler and Fiat arms. The Fiat 500 will enter Chrysler into a new B segment market, while two further platforms set to be inherited from Fiat will allow new C and D segment offerings. New Chrysler platforms will underpin models in SUV, Minivan and CUV segments.

The details are the first to emerge from Wednesday’s five-year business plan meeting at Chrysler’s headquarters in Auburn Hills, Mich.

Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne intends to spell out how Chrysler will drive sales under his leadership. Marchionne, CEO of Fiat SpA (FIATY, F.MI), took over Chrysler in June after the company filed for bankruptcy protection.

The new Dodge vehicles will include an all new compact model along with a sub-compact hatchback and a midsized sedan. These cars will be introduced from 2012 through 2013.

The midsized truck is under consideration for assembly and introduction in 2011.

Chrysler also intends to refocus its Dodge NASCAR promotion to the Penske team only. The complete motorsports program is under review.
