Fiat, Italy’s largest automobile company controls 20% Chrysler, wants to provide small-sized car at auto show in Los Angeles in November.
Chrysler at a meeting with 400 dealers on Monday announced that in the near future in the U.S. will open 165 Fiat dealerships across the United States, the largest automobile market in the world.
According to the head of the North American division Fiat Laura Souv in the U.S. there are many people who would like to buy energy-efficient car of Italian design.
“A new network of dealers will sell Fiat cars Fiat 500 U.S. version at the end of the year and model Fiat 500 Cabrio in 2011,” – said in a press release. Auto Fiat 500 for the U.S. market will be collected in the Mexican city Tolusa, while the motors for them will be produced in the U.S.
The North American version of the Fiat 500 will have a four-cylinder engine volume of 1.4 liters.

Our spy photographers have caught the first full-bodied images of the 2012 Chrysler 300.

While still camouflaged, we can clearly see the model will be instantly recognizable as a 300. Styling highlights include dramatic headlights, a revised grille, sculpted doors, and a rear bumper with an integrated dual exhaust system. Inside, the cabin will be outfitted with a multi-tiered center console, fake wood trim, and higher quality materials.

Engine options are expected to include a 290 hp (216 kW / 294 PS) 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, a 360 hp (268 kW / 365 PS) 5.7-liter HEMI V8, and a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 with up to 525 hp (391 kW / 532 PS). As we have previously reported, Chrysler has promised the Pentastar V6 will be 22% more fuel efficient than today’s 3.5-liter V6. This translates into a fuel economy rating of 21 mpg city / 30 mpg highway.

Look for an unveiling during the first half of 2011, with sales starting shortly thereafter.

Officials at Chrysler Group LLC are optimistic that they will be able to reveal improved financial forecasts by the end of the year. Executives and investors at the firm were pleased to discover that the company recorded an operating profit of $183 million for the second quarter of 2010.

Despite the gains in operating profit, a figure derived solely from Chrysler’s core business and not from other activities, the third largest automaker in the U.S. actually recorded a net loss of $172 million. This is 12.7% better than Chrysler’s first quarter net loss of $197 million.

No comparison to 2009 can be given as Chrysler Group LLC is just over a year old. The firm was born out of the bankruptcy restructuring of Chrysler LLC.

Improvements in operating profits were the result of added consumer interest in Chrysler vehicles following product introductions and sales incentives. Production was increased at the firm to meet the added demand.

Other figures in Chrysler’s data release includes $10.5 billion in net revenue, on 407,000 car and truck sales. Still, Chrysler’s near-12 percent increase in U.S. vehicle deliveries is far short of the 16.7 percent increase seen industry wide.

“Chrysler Group must continue to be rigorous, disciplined and focused on the task at hand,” Chrysler and Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a company statement. He acknowledged that for Chrysler to get back to its glory days, “an extraordinary amount of work still lies ahead.”

According to Chrysler’s CEO, Sergio Marchionne, the beleaguered company has made an operating profit for the second quarter of 2010.

While detailed information won’t be released until August 9th, Chrysler’s bottom line was helped by Fiat’s decision to distribute Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles in Italy, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Regardless, it’s hard to remember the last time anyone said “Chrysler” and “profit” in the same sentence.

Fiat, on the other hand, earned 113 million euros ($146 million) in the second quarter. This was due, in part, to a 6.7% increase in vehicles sales (of Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati and Ferrari) which helped worldwide revenues rise 12.5% to 14.8 billion euros ($19.1 billion).

Another day, another recall

Chrysler will recall nearly 700,000 vehicles, worldwide, to fix brake and electrical problems.

The first recall involves 365,398 Jeep Wranglers – built between May 15th, 2006 and August 9th, 2010 – which have a poorly designed braking system. During normal driving, the front fender liner can rub against brake lines. Over time, the rubbing could cause the brake lines to leak which would result in reduced stopping power.

The second recall affects 318,974 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans made between February and September 2007. These vehicles have improperly placed wiring, in the sliding doors, which can have the insulation stripped off them. If this happens, two stripped wires can touch each other and start a fire.

Beginning later this month, owners can have their vehicles repaired free of charge.

Fiat will consolidate its European dealer network for the Chrysler and Lancia brands

The alliance between Fiat and Chrysler will be working both ways. Chrysler models will also be shared with Fiat’s Lancia brand and be sold under that badge in Europe.

The new platform-sharing project is part of a plan by Fiat to consolidate and shrink its Lancia and Chrysler dealer network in Europe by over 300 dealers from the current 1,200. As part of the alliance deal, Fiat owns the distribution rights for the Chrysler brand in Europe.

“Our plan is to have in place by May 2011 a Lancia/Chrysler integrated network comprising about 800 dealers and over 1,000 dealerships,” said Olivier Francois, CEO for Chrysler and Lancia, in an e-mail interview with Automotive News Europe.

Chrysler models that will be sold in Europe under the Lancia marque include a new compact sedan, a mid-sized sedan which will be replacing the PT Cruiser and Sebring models, the 300C full-sized sedan and a new Voyager minivan.

The decision is part of Fiat’s plan for a resurgent Lancia brand in Europe. Fiat has devised a strategic, five-year plan to sell 300,000 Lancia-Chrysler models per year in Europe by 2014. Last year, Fiat sold 132,500 Lancia’s in Europe, the vast majority in the Italian market.

Fresh off their release of a Maybach 57S Coupe, German tuners Xenatec have released their ideas for another new model. Created with the help of SchulteDesign, the company has come up with a series of vehicle renderings that will turn the heads of some, and the stomachs of others.

Xenatec is known for their work in armored vehicles, as well as custom jobs. Some of the work they perform includes raised roofs, stretching, and sports car conversions. Currently, the company has three completed Audi A8L custom jobs on offer.

Amongst the cool vehicles are the Chrysler 300 cabriolet, Lexus 460 LS coupe, Volkswagen Touareg pick-up truck, and a Bentley Continental Flying Spur stretched 70 cm. Some of the more frightening models include the Porsche Cayenne pick-up, Mercedes-Benz CLS wagon and coupe, Aston Martin Shooting Brake, BMW 7-Series with a 12-cm raised roof, and the 30-cm stretched Audi R8.

Chrysler Financial repays $1.9B of government bailout loans

Chrysler Holding, the current owner of Chrysler Financial and former owner of the auto-making division, has repaid $1.9 billion of a $4 billion bailout loan provided by the U.S. government. The repayment helps to lift a $2 billion lien on Chrysler Financial held by the government, allowing Chrysler Holding to either expand the financing arm, wind it down or sell it off.

While Chrysler and the Government claim this to be a victory of sorts, the reality is not much to write home about. The U.S. government will likely lose at least $1.6 billion on the total deal, though previously the administration thought they would lose not recover any of the $4 billion loan package.

Trying to remain optimistic, a spokesman for the Treasury Department told the Detroit News, “[the repayment] is significantly more than the Treasury expected to recover on this loan.”

The holding company is owned by Cerberus Capital Management LP, the private equity business that snapped up over 80% of Chrysler and Chrysler Financial in 2007. Neither Cerberus nor Chrysler Financial responded to interview requests.

Meanwhile, the Chrysler Group, which owns the automaker and was spun off last year after Chrysler went into bankruptcy, still owes $5.7 billion to the U.S. government and $1.2 billion to the Canadian government. This does not include $2.4 billion in loans that were approved but untapped. The Chrysler Group is partially owned by the United States, and is expected to repay all of its outstanding government debt by 2014.

Chrysler will be keeping the Sebring name for its mid-sized sedan offering, at least for now, despite speculation that it was going to change the nameplate to Nassau.

The change to Nassau was widely reported on in the press but never made official by Chrysler. Now, a Detroit Bureau source says that “As of last week, the name was still Sebring.”

But why the fuss?

Because Chrysler is still strapped for cash and a name change can be costly. Auto industry analysts say that an effective nameplate change in the U.S. market can mean excess marketing costs of $100 million (€79 million) or more to promote the new vehicle as opposed to keeping the same name for a next-generation launch.

Chrysler, now owned by Italian automaker Fiat, is developing a new Sebring sedan on a Fiat platform. The model is set to debut in 2011.

More government money heads to GM & Chrysler

$23 billion combined

Chrysler Group LLC and General Motors Co. are seeking a combined $23 billion in loans from the U.S. Department of Energy for renovating factories. If approved, the loans would come from a $25 billion fund set up in 2008, and would carry a lower rate of interest than loans already provided by the U.S. Government.

GM’s request of $14.4 billion and Chrysler’s application for $8.55 billion have passed the several hurdles required by the loan programme. The purpose of the loans is to spur development of fuel efficient vehicles that use at least 25% less fuel than similar sized models, and companies must prove that the loans will be used to that end.

“It’s a really a process of making sure that each of the projects that they have are in fact competitive,” Energy Dept. adviser Matt Rogers reportedly said. “Now that we have clear financial statements, we’re actually working quite aggressively with them and expect to get some results there shortly,”

Thus far, $9 billion has been handed out from the programme. Over 100 different companies have applied for a combined total of $42.7 billion. Amongst those companies are Ford Motor Co., which took $5.9 billion after initially requesting $11 billion. Nissan, Fisker and Tesla have each received their share, respectively taking $1.6 billion, $529 million, and $465 million. The loans were handed out on a 25-year payback plan

Financing may be used either to build or renew factories, or directly for the production of parts and vehicles.

CEO Sergio Marchionne says that a set of new sedans is in development

The news from Detroit is that Chrylser is developing a Fiat-based compact sedan to mark new territory in its model lineup.

There have been previous reports that the Sebring was to be replaced by the Nassau but this compact sedan is an entirely new model. No details on what it would look like were given, but Chrysler said that it is being developed on an expedited basis.

“We are 98 percent there on styling,” Chrysler Group LLC CEO Sergio Marchionne said in a conference call with investors – referring to a new set of sedan models the company was developing. Marchionne said that development on the new Fiat-based models was far enough along that some of them can be expected to make their debut by the end of 2011.

Aside from the new compact sedan, new models in development include an unspecified number of cars and crossovers. Chrysler Group already builds the Dodge Caliber and the Jeep Compass and Patriot – three crossover vehicles. It seems it is a larger array of passenger cars which its lineup is in need of.

The company may be feeling the heat from the competition as new models such as the Chevrolet Cruze and Ford Focus arrive on the scene. Chrysler’s recovery from bankruptcy still remains uncertain and Marchionne is speeding up the process of bringing new models to the marketplace to improve the company’s chances of survival. Marchionne is also trying to take the new Chrysler public again ahead of schedule.

Nissan, Ford, Chrysler lead U.S. sales gain of 20% in April

April figures indicate a seasonally adjusted rate of 11.5 million unit sales for the year

Automobile sales in the U.S. market bounced back resoundingly last month with Ford, Nissan and Chrysler posting the biggest gains.

Vehicle retail sales were up 20 percent in the United States for the month of April. Industry sales totaled 982,302 units for the month, up from 819,692 for April of last year. That figure means a seasonally adjusted rate of 11.5 million unit sales for the year – an encouraging indicator but still well below the more than 16 million unit highs seen in the middle of the last decade.

Ford saw its sales rise 25 percent, with a sharp increase (42 percent) in its F-Series pickup truck range and a 41 percent jump for its Escape SUV. Chrysler also had a 25 percent increase in sales, the first time it has seen a double-digit gain in five years. Nissan had one of the highest gains in the industry with a 35 percent jump.

But the benefits of higher sales were had by almost all automakers – with Subaru boosting sales by a whopping 48 percent and VW Group (including Audi) experiencing a much needed bump of 39 percent.

Even Toyota, plagued recently by recall problems and a federal fine for not reporting them on time, saw a rise in sales of 24 percent – driven by incentives the automaker has had to provide customers in order to maintain its market share.

Chrysler Reveals Moparized Jeep and Ram Trucks at Moab Easter Jeep Safari

Chrysler used the beautiful setting of Moab, Utah, as the backdrop for the unveiling of several tuned vehicles from the Jeep and Ram Truck line. The models were tuned by Chrysler parts outfit Mopar, and are being shown off at the annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari this weekend.

The “Moparized” vehicles (Chrysler’s words, not ours) is meant to show consumers the less-common parts available in the Mopar catalogue, as well as parts that might become available. The six concepts shown off in Moab bring the total of Mopar-designed customs to 20 since 2002.

“Moab is a proving ground for us to test our vehicles on extreme trails alongside our customers,” said Jeep Design Studio head Mark Allen. “We will take all of the feedback we get from our customers right back to the design studio with us.”

Of the six concepts, five are Jeeps. They include the military-inspired Jeep Wrangler J7 with large tires and high clearance, the bright orange Jeep Patriot Extreme off-roader, the V6-powered Jeep Wrangler Trail Boss off-road vehicle with leather, the turbodiesel Jeep Nukizer 715 military machine with upgraded drivetrain, carbon fiber and pickup box, and The General.

The General is based on a 2009 Jeep Wrangler with a 4.5-inch lift kit, big off-road bumpers, rock rails, and more. Also on the scene is the 5.7-liter V8 Ram PowerWagon full-size pickup with a 120-inch wheelbase, 40-inch tires, and four-inch suspension lift.

Auburn Hills, Mich., Mar 31, 2010 – Chrysler Group LLC arrived with truckloads of head-turning, “Moparized” Jeep® and Ram Truck vehicles to showcase at the 44th annual Moab Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah.

“Our customized production vehicles show how Mopar can accessorize Jeep and Ram vehicles that are on the road today while our image vehicles showcase directions we could take in the future,” said Pietro Gorlier, President and Chief Executive Officer – Mopar Service, Parts and Customer Care, Chrysler Group LLC. “We will gauge reaction to these vehicles. And as we develop our next generation of new Mopar parts and accessories, we will listen closely to this dedicated group of hard-core off-road enthusiasts.”

“Moparized” Vehicles
The Mopar design team is a small group of dedicated engineers, designers and fabricators who are led by Mark Allen, Chief Designer – Head of Jeep Design Studio, Chrysler Group LLC. The Mopar design team has been customizing production vehicles since 2002 and has introduced nearly 20 concept vehicles to enthusiast crowds at the Moab Jeep Safari.

The Mopar off-road engineering team is led by Keith Montone, Manager – Mopar Jeep and Ram Off-road Engineering, Chrysler Group LLC. This experienced group of vehicle engineers is dedicated to providing Jeep and Ram customers with the best off-road parts and accessories. The team has introduced many new parts and played a key role in developing the first aftermarket lift kits available from an automotive manufacturer.

“Moab is a proving ground for us to test our vehicles on extreme trails alongside our customers,” said Allen. “We will take all of the feedback we get from our customers right back to the design studio with us.”

Jeep Wrangler J7
Built off of a four-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the Jeep Wrangler J7 is designed to have the basic appeal of military-issued vehicles. The Mopar team removed standard content including carpet, fog lamps, alloy wheels and the stereo system before adding front and rear steel bumpers, ‘helicopter hooks’, a heavy-duty tailgate and steel wheels. Off-road capability is increased with a Mopar 2-inch suspension lift and 35-inch Mickey Thompson tires. The unique Mustard Plug exterior paint is highlighted with Jeep Wrangler J7 graphics.

Additional protection is added to the front and rear fascias with custom rock rails. Mopar added heavy-duty slush mats, Kicker audio and a roof-mounted snowboard carrier.

The vehicle features a half-door kit, sun bonnet, front and rear AEV off-road bumpers, a Warn 9.5ti winch, rear-tire carrier, AEV hood, 3-inch lift kit, Hutchinson Rock Monster beadlock wheels, Katzkin leather seat trim kit, slush mats and a Kicker audio system.

Jeep Nukizer 715
The Jeep Nukizer 715 is an all-purpose truck that pays homage to the beloved military-only Kaiser M-715 truck. With a military-issue Jeep J8 four-door, the Mopar team converted the vehicle into a pickup body style by adding an aftermarket AEV Brute pickup box built for a TJ. To increase the size of the vehicle, the wheelbase is stretched to 124 inches from 116 inches. Enforcing the brand’s iconic M-715 is a new front clip produced in carbon fiber that re-creates the characteristic forward slant of the M-715 truck. To top it off, Bestop provided a unique soft top which artfully captures all of the quirks of the original.

Drivetrain upgrades include beefy Dynatrac Pro-Rock Dana 44 front and Dana 60 rear axles filled with 5:38 gears and ARB Airlocker differentials. Power is distributed by an Atlas II transfer case spinning custom driveshafts from Tom Woods. To keep the military look, tires are 38-inch BF Goodrich Mud Terrains mounted on Hutchinson beadlock wheels.

The powerplant remains a J8-specific 2.8-liter turbo diesel I-4 that has been treated to a re-programmed controller for more boost. Fuel is supplied from a custom Gen-Right tank made specifically for this vehicle and mounts to the rear cross member.

For body protection, Mopar added Jeep Wrangler rock rails and off-road bumpers. Other features include a Warn 9.5XP low-profile winch equipped with a Master Pull synthetic winch line, Warn air compressor, Terraflex dual-rate front sway bar and Garmin GPS Map 640 navigation unit.

Ram PowerWagon
The mighty Ram Power Wagon is the full-size pickup truck of choice in a range of off-road situations. For Mopar’s Ram PowerWagon image vehicle, the team mated a unique 120-inch wheelbase chassis to a regular cab and step-side box. Axle articulation is greatly increased by utilizing the rear link-coil suspension of the Ram 1500. To gain additional ground clearance, Mopar added a new 4-inch suspension lift and 40-inch tires. Body protection comes from Rock-Slide Engineering-supplied sill guards, and custom front and rear bumpers. The spare tire is re-located to the cargo box. For visual impact, the team used a menacing two-tone black-on-white look, inspired by the wild paint schemes of Power Wagons in the 1970s.

The General
For the ultimate in rock-crawling capability, “The General” features a custom Mopar 4.5-inch performance lift kit installed on a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. A new flat fender kit and Mopar/Hutchinson Rock Monster beadlocks allow tire pressure to be safely lowered for extreme driving conditions. Front and rear off-road bumpers and rock rails offer serious protection while the Mopar half-door kit provides improved visibility. The hood and rear spare tire carrier feature custom Mopar graphics splashed across the Mopar Blue exterior.

Mopar Ram Runner
This is a new kind of Ram. Inspired by Baja-style desert racing, this 4×4 is unlike any other in captivity. The rigors of off-road racing require large tires, plenty of ground clearance, extreme durability and a sophisticated suspension system capable of withstanding tremendous impact. These features are combined into a package that is stable at speed and rock-solid in the corners. To achieve this kind of handling, a low center of gravity and long wheel travel are paramount.

The Mopar Ram Runner has the look and feel of thoroughbred desert racer. Inspired by trophy trucks, steel front fenders and rear bed-sides are replaced with fiberglass, allowing tremendous suspension articulation with zero interference.

Mopar ImMortal
The Mopar ImMortal is a Jeep Wrangler featuring portal axles, a 5.7-liter HEMI and off-road bumpers. Military-grade portal axle ends are engineered to mate to Mopar’s Pro Rock and Power Wagon performance axles and adapted to fit the suspension. Portal axle ends provide 5 inches of lift and contain a 1.5 gear reduction. Combined with the 4:1 transfer case, the result is a hard-core 100:1 crawl ratio. The Mopar ImMortal is sheathed in Jeep performance body armor for intense protection.

When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts maker, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.
